Research with patients in mind.

Work on informed decisions, prostate diagnosis, urinary recovery and bladder problems after radiotherapy.

Understanding treatment choices

Predict Prostate · European Urology, 2021

Professor Ilie was a co-author of a multicentre randomised trial involving 145 men with newly diagnosed non-metastatic prostate cancer. It examined how a personalised risk-communication tool affected patients’ understanding and decision-making.

The study concerns informed treatment choices. Its findings help explain the role of clear risk communication at consultation.

Urinary recovery after prostatectomy

Post-prostatectomy incontinence: a guideline of guidelines · BJU International, 2024

Co-authored by Professor Ilie, this review examined professional guidance on assessing and managing urinary leakage after prostatectomy. It is relevant to the discussion of recovery, rehabilitation and persistent symptoms.

A review of guidelines is distinct from the two NHS surgical series reported on this website.

Improving the experience of prostate biopsy

CamPROBE multicentre evaluation · Journal of Clinical Urology, 2020

Professor Ilie was a co-author and participating-site clinician in a six-centre evaluation involving 40 patients. The study assessed a device for transperineal prostate biopsy under local anaesthetic, including patients’ experience and diagnostic performance.

This early evaluation involved 40 patients across six centres. Professor Ilie will discuss the biopsy method, benefits and risks appropriate for your care.

Bladder bleeding after pelvic radiotherapy

PuraStat / RADA16 feasibility research · World Journal of Urology, 2026

Professor Ilie was first author of a small single-arm study of endoscopic treatment for severe radiation-related bladder bleeding. Nine of ten patients had complete resolution during the reported follow-up; the remaining patient’s intermittent bleeding resolved by one year.

These early findings provide a basis for further research. Larger studies are needed to confirm the results and compare effectiveness. This treatment is not offered as a routine private service.

Presented surgical results

The 59-patient single-surgeon series and 90-patient anterior-hood series are described separately on the outcomes page. They are presented NHS results, reported separately from the publications listed above. The Prostate Cancer Research / Infopool webinar replay provides further context.

A small 2024 technique paper in the Atena Journal of Urology also discusses purposeful practice in robotic prostatectomy. Professor Ilie is both an author and the journal’s Editor-in-Chief. Its ten-patient pilot should be interpreted in the context of its size and outcome definitions.

Evidence in context

Discuss how the evidence relates to your diagnosis, treatment choices, risks and recovery. The patient group, outcome definitions and follow-up period help you interpret each study.

Discuss the research relevant to your diagnosis and the choices you are considering.
